Research Report

Question: You are a rigorous financial research analyst. Ground EVERY quantitative claim in data you actually pulled from the finance tools — never invent a price, multiple, or indicator. Answer the REQUEST below by:

  1. Identifying the specific publicly-tradable assets (tickers) it concerns. When the request is open-ended (e.g. "top up-and-coming tech companies"), first find concrete candidates: use finance_data (action=search) to resolve names to tickers, and web search / the browser for qualitative discovery.
  2. For EVERY ticker you discuss, pull real data with the finance tools:
  1. Writing a concise report: a short investment thesis for each asset (why it is interesting, grounded in the pulled price/fundamentals/news/insider data), then a summary table with columns: Ticker | Price | 1d% | 5d% | 20d% | RSI | P/E | Trend. Rank assets by thesis strength, cite notable news/insider signals, and clearly flag any ticker you could not fetch.

REQUEST: How did the US stock market perform today, including the major indices, the biggest movers, and what drove them? Any interesting acquisitions or sales?

Executive Summary

There was no US session on 2026-10-17 — it fell on a Saturday. The last completed session was Friday, 2026-10-16, which is the as-of date for every figure below. That is confirmed both by calendar and by the price data: every daily bar pulled via finance_data stops at 2026-10-16 13:30:00 UTC with no October 17 bar, and every session recap surfaced is explicitly labelled "Friday" (Investopedia, updated Oct 16, 2026 4:29 PM EDT).

Friday was a narrow, tech-led risk-off day inside a violent rotation, not a broad liquidation. The S&P 500 fell 1.09% to 7,659.44 and the Nasdaq Composite 2.15% to 26,140.03, while the Dow lost just 0.34% to 52,002.41 and the Russell 2000 1.66% to 2,721.37 — a 2.2-point Dow-vs-Nasdaq spread. Three things drove it: a second collapse in CoreWeave (−12%) on its ~$50B debt load that radiated through memory and semis; a 10-year Treasury yield back above 5.09% after Wednesday's hot CPI, with Fed Chair Kevin Warsh refusing rate guidance at the IMF; and WTI crude +3.4% to $101.35 on Middle East supply risk. Energy was the only sector that worked (XLE +2.52%, a near-52-week-high close). On deals: Copart completed its acquisition of ACV Auctions and Grindr agreed to buy "Freddie" for $250M — the only in-window transaction with a stated dollar value.

Weekly context (Investopedia, Oct 16): Nasdaq −4.5%, snapping a four-week win streak; S&P −2%, its fourth negative week in six; Dow +0.7%, a second straight weekly gain — a ~5.2pp rotation from growth into value.

Small print: the S&P's −1.09% is the tool value; Investopedia rounds it to "1.2%" and AP to "1.1%", and the Dow prints 52,002.41 on the Yahoo quote feed versus 52,007.21 on the TVC index feed (eOption: "52,001"). The discrepancies are sub-0.1% and do not change any conclusion. All four indices sit below their 50-day SMAs — a uniform short-term breakdown — while the S&P and Dow remain above their 200-days.

Whole-market breadth was still negative — roughly 2,977 advancers against 6,694 decliners, 1,198 new 52-week lows versus 340 highs, and only 23% of stocks above their 50-day (stocksetups.com, describing the Oct 16 close) — but the damage inside the S&P was overwhelmingly mega-cap.

Analysis

The single most useful fact about Friday is that the index move and the market's internals disagree, and the internals are right. A −2.15% Nasdaq day paired with a −0.34% Dow, RSP outperforming SPY by 0.68pp and value beating growth by 2.09pp is a mega-cap de-rating, not a risk-off event. If it were genuine risk-off, equal-weight would have lagged and REITs would have sold off on a 5.10% 10-year — instead XLRE rose 0.41%.

That also means the "rates did the damage" story is weaker than it looks. The 10-year fell 2.79% over the week while XLK fell 7.70%; the correlation is inverted. The 5%+ yield explains the level of AI multiples, but the timing of Friday's move came from the credit channel — CoreWeave's balance sheet, Goldman's debt-financing warnings, and the read-through to every neocloud and memory name. Watch credit spreads and CRWV funding costs, not the CPI calendar.

Energy is the second thing to be careful about. XLE at the 99.8th percentile of its range with RSI 69.1 is a crowded momentum position riding a $101 oil price set by geopolitics, not by demand. It cushioned the Dow on Friday and it is the most reversal-prone thing on the board.

US Equity Session Recap — As-of Session: Friday, 2026-10-16

Trading-day status: 2026-10-17 was not a US trading day — it fell on a Saturday. The last completed session was Friday, October 16, 2026, and that is the as-of date for every figure below. This is corroborated by contemporaneous session coverage that explicitly labels Oct 16 as "Friday" ("Happy Friday. Stocks were mixed Friday…", TheStreet, published Oct 16, 2026 — https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/stock-market-today-oct-16-141132915.html) and "The Nasdaq and S&P 500 finished Friday down a respective 2.1% and 1.2%" (Investopedia, updated Oct 16, 2026 4:29 PM EDT — https://www.investopedia.com/stock-market-today-dow-jones-s-and-p-500-10162026-12176848). Consequently the 2026-10-17→2026-10-17 freshness window contains no session data; all in-window news cited below is dated 2026-10-16.

1. Executive Summary

US equities closed sharply lower on Friday, October 16, 2026, capping a week in which an AI-credit narrative, not a macro data surprise, did the damage. The Nasdaq Composite fell 2.15% and the S&P 500 1.09%, while the Dow lost only 0.34% — a growth-vs-value split of roughly six-to-one. The proximate cause was a second collapse in CoreWeave (CRWV, −12%) on debt-financing concerns, which radiated through memory, semis and the Magnificent Seven. The macro backdrop was actively hostile: the 10-year Treasury yield sat above 5.09% after spiking to 5.33% on the week's hot CPI, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh used an IMF appearance in Bangkok to decline any rate guidance, and WTI crude jumped 3.4% to $101.35 on Middle East risk. Futures-implied odds of a Fed hike at the late-October meeting fell to 17% from 28% — the market's problem is not a coming hike, it is the cost of capital already in place.

Round 0 · Finding 2

US Equity Session Recap — As-of Friday, 2026-10-16

1. Executive Summary

2026-10-17 was NOT a US trading day. Markets were closed (Saturday), so every figure in this report is for the last completed session: Friday, October 16, 2026. This is confirmed empirically rather than assumed: the finance tool's most recent daily bar for every index and ETF pulled is 2026-10-16 13:30:00 UTC (09:30 ET), and every session recap returned by search is explicitly labeled "Friday, Oct. 16, 2026."

The session was a tech-led risk-off day with a sharp sector rotation rather than a broad collapse. The S&P 500 fell ~1.1% and the Nasdaq 100 fell 2.5%, while the Dow lost only 0.3% and booked a second straight weekly gain. Energy and defensives were bid; AI infrastructure, semis, and memory were sold hard. The proximate drivers were (a) a hawkish repricing after this week's hot CPI/PPI prints, with the 10-year yield above 5.09%, and (b) a Middle East supply shock that pushed WTI above $101 and Brent above $109, which simultaneously crushed rate-sensitive growth stocks and lifted every energy name on the tape.

M&A: a genuinely busy tape. I verified one qualifying in-window deal with a stated value (Grindr / "Freddie," $250M), but could not verify cash/stock mix, premium, or the target's price reaction for it, and could not verify deal values for the other in-window items.

3. Detailed Analysis

3.1 Was 2026-10-17 a trading day?

No. Evidence: the finance_data analyze call returned "last_bar": "2026-10-16 13:30:00" for all eight instruments pulled (SPX, NDX, DJI, RUT, SPY, QQQ, DIA, IWM) — i.e., no October 17 bar exists. Every market recap surfaced is titled for Friday: "Markets News, Oct. 16, 2026" (Investopedia), "How major US stock indexes fared Friday 10/16/2026" (AP), "Stock Market News, Oct. 16, 2026" (WSJ, Barron's, MarketWatch). Round 0 · Finding 3

US Equity Session Recap — as-of Friday, 2026-10-16

1. Was the market open on Saturday 2026-10-17?

No. 2026-10-17 falls on a Saturday; US equity markets are closed on weekends, so there is no 2026-10-17 session to report. The as-of session for every figure in this report is Friday, 2026-10-16 (regular close 16:00 ET).

Tool-level corroboration: every daily series I pulled returned a last_bar of 2026-10-16 13:30:00 UTC (09:30 ET bar open) and no 2026-10-17 bar — i.e. the data vendor's most recent completed daily bar is Friday's, consistent with a non-trading Saturday.

A useful consistency check on that boundary: Zacks' "Stock Market News for Oct 16, 2026" reports the prior session with the Nasdaq closing at 26,713.03 (zacks.com). Applying my tool-pulled Friday change of −2.145% to 26,713.03 reproduces ≈26,140, matching the tool's Friday close of 26,140.03 exactly — so the tool series and the news calendar are aligned on the same two sessions.

2. Index closing levels and returns (finance_data action=analyze, daily bars)

All four pulled from finance_data; ^GSPC/^IXIC/^DJI/^RUT are not resolvable under Yahoo's caret convention in this tool, so I used the TradingView/SP exchange equivalents that did return data (SP:SPX, TVC:IXIC, TVC:DJI, TVC:RUT). Flagging the symbol substitution explicitly rather than hiding it.

Round 0 · Finding 4

US Equity Session Recap — As-of Session: Friday, 2026-10-16 (markets were CLOSED on 2026-10-17)

1. Executive Summary

2026-10-17 was NOT a US trading day. It fell on a Saturday; US regular hours run Monday–Friday, 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. ET (https://vittarthi.com/markets/us, FAQ: "Regular US trading runs 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM ET, Monday to Friday"). Every figure below is therefore labeled to the last completed session, Friday 2026-10-16.

That session was a sharp tech-led risk-off day with a defensive/energy rotation underneath: the Nasdaq 100 fell 2.50% and Technology was the worst S&P 500 sector at −2.62%, while Energy (+2.49%), Utilities (+1.39%) and Consumer Staples (+1.29%) rose. Breadth was decisively negative — 2,977 advancers vs 6,694 decliners, 1,198 new 52-week lows, and only 23% of stocks above their 50-day average (https://stocksetups.com/today, dated 2026-10-17, describing the Oct 16, 2026 close).

Two material gaps, stated up front rather than filled: (a) I could not retrieve an S&P 500 index level — only its percent change; (b) I could not verify any reported EPS or revenue figure versus consensus for the Oct 16 reporters, and I found no acquisition/divestiture in the window. Details in §6.

Note the small Dow discrepancy: the DJI index print is −0.337% while DIA is −0.399% and the page says −0.40% — I report the index print and flag the spread rather than picking one.

S&P 500 level flagged as unavailable: finance_data returned "no data" for ^GSPC, SPX and US500 across every exchange attempted. I will not back it out of SPY by hand.

3. What Drove the Session

Sector dispersion was the story, not a uniform selloff. At the Oct 16, 2026 close (https://stocksetups.com/today):

US Equity Session Recap — As-of Friday, 2026-10-16

1. Executive Summary

2026-10-17 was NOT a US trading day. It was a Saturday; the last completed session was Friday, 2026-10-16, and every figure below is labeled to that session. This is confirmed by the price data itself — the daily bars for all four index proxies end at 2026-10-16 13:30:00 with no 2026-10-17 bar (finance_data action=analyze, SPY/QQQ/DIA/IWM) — and by contemporaneous coverage that repeatedly calls 2026-10-16 "Friday" ("The Nasdaq's four-week winning streak came to a sharp end Friday," Investopedia, updated Oct 16, 2026 04:29 PM EDT, https://www.investopedia.com/stock-market-today-dow-jones-s-and-p-500-10162026-12176848).

The session was a tech-led risk-off day inside an inflation-and-oil shock: the Nasdaq Composite fell 2.15% and the S&P 500 1.09%, while the Dow slipped only 0.34% as capital rotated into energy and defensives. Two dated macro forces did the damage — a hotter-than-expected CPI/PPI week that pushed the 10-year yield above 5.09%, and crude oil surging past $101 WTI on Middle East supply risk.

Russell 2000 (^RUT)2,721.372,767.27−1.659%

These reconcile with press tallies: eOption's closing recap lists "DJ Industrials −176.17 0.34% 52,001; S&P 500 −84.65 1.09% 7,659; Nasdaq −572.99 2.14% 26,140; Russell 2000 −45.90 1.66% 2,721" (Oct 16, 2026, https://www.eoption.com/market-review-october-16-2026/). Note Investopedia rounds the S&P move to "1.2%"; the tool's unrounded −1.093% is used here.

Weekly context (dated Oct 16): Nasdaq −4.5% for the week, snapping a four-week win streak; S&P −2%, its fourth negative week in six; Dow +0.7%, a second straight weekly gain (Investopedia, Oct 16, 2026).

US Equity Session Recap — Friday, 2026-10-16

(2026-10-17 was NOT a trading day)

1. Session Status — Read This First

2026-10-17 is a Saturday. US equity markets were closed. The last completed session was Friday, 2026-10-16, and that is the as-of date for every figure below.

This is confirmed two ways:

Consequence for sourcing: the in-window news wire I retrieved is dated 2026-10-17 (Saturday) and consists almost entirely of weekend geopolitical items published after Friday's 16:00 ET close. Those cannot be used to explain Friday's tape, and I have not done so. See §7 for the explicit catalyst gap.

2. Executive Summary

Friday 2026-10-16 was a narrow, tech-led risk-off session with a violent rotation into energy, defensives and value — not a broad liquidation. The S&P 500 fell 1.09% while the Dow fell only 0.34%, but the Nasdaq-100 dropped 2.50% and semis (SMH) fell 3.41%. The equal-weight S&P (RSP, −0.42%) beat the cap-weighted index by ~0.68pp and value (IWD, −0.14%) beat growth (IWF, −2.22%) by ~2.09pp — the signature of a mega-cap unwind, not a risk-off day.

The one genuinely market-wide stress signal was volatility: VIX closed 19.99, +21.45% on the day, its largest single-session jump in the 250-bar window, with RSI-14 at 68.7 and an uptrend classification. That is a hedging event, not a selling event.

Energy was the outlier: XLE +2.52% to $68.24, sitting at the 99.8th percentile of its 52-week range (high $68.29 — essentially a fresh 52-week closing high), RSI 69.1, strong_uptrend.

Two material gaps, stated plainly: I could not retrieve a verified list of individual stock gainers/decliners (§6) or a confirmed M&A transaction with deal terms in the window (§7). I am flagging both rather than estimating.
