Research Report

Question: You are a rigorous financial research analyst. Ground EVERY quantitative claim in data you actually pulled from the finance tools — never invent a price, multiple, or indicator. Answer the REQUEST below by:

  1. Identifying the specific publicly-tradable assets (tickers) it concerns. When the request is open-ended (e.g. "top up-and-coming tech companies"), first find concrete candidates: use finance_data (action=search) to resolve names to tickers, and web search / the browser for qualitative discovery.
  2. For EVERY ticker you discuss, pull real data with the finance tools:
  1. Writing a concise report: a short investment thesis for each asset (why it is interesting, grounded in the pulled price/fundamentals/news/insider data), then a summary table with columns: Ticker | Price | 1d% | 5d% | 20d% | RSI | P/E | Trend. Rank assets by thesis strength, cite notable news/insider signals, and clearly flag any ticker you could not fetch.

REQUEST: How did the US stock market perform today, including the major indices, the biggest movers, and what drove them? Any interesting acquisitions or sales?

US Market Recap — Wednesday, 2026-10-28 (as of 10:17 a.m. ET)

Executive Summary

Stocks drifted modestly higher into late morning on 2026-10-28 in a low-conviction, pre-Fed tape: the Dow led at +0.28%, the Russell 2000 +0.20%, the S&P 500 +0.13% to 7,732.62, and the Nasdaq Composite essentially flat at +0.01%. The S&P's move was smaller than 84% of sessions over the past year (pulsafi). Two things were driving it, and neither had resolved by my last data pull: an FOMC decision due at 2:00 p.m. ET (a hold was ~91–93% priced), and Alphabet/Microsoft earnings after the close (USA Today, 28 Oct 08:05 ET, TheStreet Pro). The real action was single-stock: Vertiv +14.7% on raised guidance and Enphase −15.6% on a soft solar outlook, with SK Hynix's record print lifting the whole memory complex.

Read this as an intraday read, not a close. Every source I could retrieve was published before the 2:00 p.m. FOMC release; the Fed's own statement URL returned 404 and no post-close article was obtainable. So: no closing levels and no Fed outcome are reported here — those are gaps, not omissions I've filled from memory.

The tell is in the 20-day column: Dow +3.18% against Nasdaq Composite −1.42% — a 4.6-point spread, i.e. rotation out of large-cap growth into value and small caps, not a broad melt-up. Breadth confirms it: at the 10-27 close, only 34% of stocks were above their 50-day average, and new 52-week lows outnumbered highs 607 to 418 (stocksetups). Sector action was compressed and defensive-tilted — 4 of 11 sectors higher, health care +0.70% leading, real estate −1.14% (most rate-sensitive) lagging (pulsafi). Communication services is the dislocation to watch: XLC at 103.07, RSI 28.0 and 0.5% off its 52-week low, down 7.1% in twenty sessions.

Moves and catalysts from Stock Titan's live blog, 2026-10-28 (published 07:13 ET, updated 09:15 ET) and stocksetups (updated 10:17 ET); VRT/ENPH prices and indicators from finance_data. Note both headline names faded from their pre-market extremes by the open (+16.2% → +14.7%; −20.4% → −15.6%), which is itself a signal of a market unwilling to chase ahead of the Fed. One caution from Stock Titan itself: "A release does not prove what moved a stock" — BRAI (+42.6%) had no company news at all.

What Drove It

The Fed, by anticipation rather than outcome. The October 27–28 FOMC statement was due at 2:00 p.m. ET with Chair Kevin Warsh's press conference at 2:30 (fomcdiff.com). A hold was ~91% priced by CME FedWatch; 94 of 100 Reuters-polled economists expected no change and all 100 expected a December hike (USA Today). Context matters: the Fed hiked in September 2026 to 3.75%–4.00%, its first increase in three years, with CPI at 3.7% y/y and PCE at 3.4% — both well above target, with the war with Iran feeding energy prices (CNN). This is a pause inside a hiking cycle, not an easing cycle. The 10-year sat at 5.00% (+1 bp, +84 bp YTD), the 30-year at 5.30%, and the 30-year mortgage at 7.32% — that's why real estate was the worst sector.

Offshore, not domestic. SK Hynix reported record Q3: revenue more than quadrupled to 104.6 trillion won ($78.9bn) and operating profit rose more than sevenfold to 83.3tn won, with DRAM and HBM sold out through 2029; shares closed +10.9% in Seoul, Samsung +9%, the Kospi +6.6%, and SOXX was indicated +1% pre-market after gaining nearly 7% over the prior two sessions (TheStreet Pro). The caveat in the same report: net profit of 39.8tn won badly missed the 61.4tn FactSet consensus.

The commodity tape was more interesting than the equity tape. WTI at $102, +1.89% on the day and +77% year-to-date; gold $4,060 (−0.35%), 24% below its January high; bitcoin $80,443 (−0.45%), 29% below its October 2025 peak; DXY 102.34 (pulsafi). Oil ripping with a 5% 10-year and a 3.7% CPI is an inflation-and-real-rates regime — which explains the sector map better than any single news item.

Analysis

Two things make this tape readable despite the flat indices. First, both VRT and ENPH are technically broken even after their moves: ENPH at 25.13 sits at the 2.6th percentile of its 52-week range (low 23.83, high 73.74) with RSI 25.1, and VRT at 239.27 is only at the 39.4th percentile (147.82–379.94) and still tagged strong_downtrend with price below its 50-day (243.48) and 200-day (269.84). Vertiv's +61% sales quarter bought a bounce inside a downtrend, not a trend change. Second, the divergences line up: health care and energy near 52-week highs (95.4% and 94.7% of range) against communication services at 0.5% of range is a defensive-plus-inflation portfolio, not a growth one — entirely consistent with a 5.00% 10-year and oil at $102.

The single-stock dispersion is the story, not the index. Twenty-six of the thirty names on Stock Titan's movers board at 9:00 a.m. had issued a company release since Tuesday's close. That is a Q3 earnings day masquerading as a quiet macro session. The sub-$5 names (BRAI at $4.91 on 440× relative volume, BOOM at $6.67, SKDD at $8.61) are the largest percentage movers and the least informative — they are alert-board noise, and the market read lives in the five S&P-scale companies that moved 6–16%.

US Equity Session Recap — Wednesday, 2026-10-28

⚠️ Scope and timing caveat (read first)

This is not a closing recap. My data pulls landed at approximately 10:17–10:22 AM EDT, roughly three and a half hours before the 2:00 p.m. ET FOMC announcement. Two independent confirmations of the clock:

So everything below is an intraday reading of 2026-10-28, plus the completed 2026-10-27 close as the reference point. I could not obtain 2026-10-28 closing levels, closing movers, or the FOMC outcome. Those are flagged as gaps rather than filled.

Executive Summary

US equities were drifting, not trending, in the first hour of 2026-10-28: the S&P 500 was up 0.15% at 7,734.00, the Dow up 0.26%, the Nasdaq essentially flat at −0.02%, and the Russell 2000 up 0.22% — a move smaller than 84% of sessions over the past year (https://www.pulsafi.com/market-today). The session's defining feature was waiting: the FOMC decision was scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET the same day, with key mega-cap tech earnings also pending (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-10-27/stock-market-today-dow-s-p-live-updates, https://fomcdiff.com/). The 10-year Treasury yield ticked up 1 bp to 5.00%, and WTI crude at $102/bbl was up 1.89% on the day and 77% year-to-date — the more interesting move was in commodities, not equities.

I found no verifiable divestiture, asset sale, spin-off, or stake sale announced on 2026-10-28. I am stating that as an absence of verified evidence, not as proof none occurred.

Prior session, 2026-10-27 close (complete session, usable as the overnight reference): S&P 500 +0.60% at 7,722.60; Nasdaq Composite +1.18% at 26,477.81; Dow +0.03% at 52,377.57, a gain of 15.99 points (https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/26/stock-market-today-live-updates.html, corroborated at https://nexqual.com/markets). Note the Dow was at 52,377.57 at the 10-27 close and 52,514.31 intraday on 10-28 — consistent with the +0.26% figure.

Round 0 · Finding 2

US Equity Market — Session Recap for Wednesday, 2026-10-28

Executive Summary

Critical caveat on timing, stated up front: every same-day source I could load was published before the cash close, and the two biggest scheduled catalysts — the FOMC decision at 2:00 pm ET and Alphabet/Microsoft earnings after the close — had not yet occurred at the timestamp of the freshest data I could retrieve. The latest dated snapshot I obtained is 10:17 AM EDT / 14:17 UTC on 2026-10-28 (pulsafi.com/market-today, dateModified: 2026-10-28T14:17:52Z; stocksetups.com/today, dateModified: 2026-10-28T14:17:13Z). The TheStreet Pro live blog's coverage window closed at 13:30 UTC (9:30 ET) (pro.thestreet.com/stock-market-today/2026-10-28).

Therefore this is an intraday recap, not a closing recap. I could not find a single source published after the 4:00 pm ET close that reported 2026-10-28 closing levels. Any "close" figure for today in this report would be invented, so none is given. This is the single largest gap in the deliverable and I am flagging it rather than filling it.

Headline: US equities were flat-to-modestly higher into late morning, with the Dow and small caps leading and the Nasdaq marginally negative — a low-conviction, pre-Fed, pre-mega-cap-earnings tape.

Key Findings

1. Index levels (intraday, 10:17 AM EDT, 2026-10-28) — HIGH confidence All four from pulsafi.com/market-today (page timestamp 2026-10-28T14:17:52Z), internally consistent with the 2026-10-27 closes reported by nexqual.com/markets:

IndexLevel 10:17 ET1d %Prior close (10-27)
S&P 5007,734.00+0.15%7,722.6

Dow Jones Industrial Average52,514.31+0.26%52,377.57
Russell 20002,825.10+0.22%n/a

A second independent same-day source, TradingEconomics, put the S&P 500 at 7,736, +0.17% on 2026-10-28 — consistent within rounding (tradingeconomics.com/united-states/stock-market). The +0.15% move was "smaller than on 84% of trading days in the past year," against a typical ±0.8% daily range (Pulsafi). S&P 500 was +12.98% YTD and 1.1% below its Oct 6 high.

US Equity Market — Session of 2026-10-28: Earnings-Driven Tape, Pre-Fed

Executive Summary

The 2026-10-28 session was a single-stock, news-driven tape ahead of the 2:00 p.m. ET FOMC decision, with index-level moves small and almost all of the day's large moves traceable to a company release published after the 2026-10-27 close or before the 2026-10-28 open. Per Stock Titan's live blog (published 2026-10-28 07:13 EDT, updated 09:15 EDT), 26 of the 30 names on its live movers board at 9:00 a.m. ET had issued a company release since Tuesday's close (stocktitan.net).

Critical data caveats up front (do not read past these):

Directionally consistent with the contemporaneous description of the tape: Stock Titan reported at 7:03 a.m. ET that "Stock index futures were split early on Wednesday, with Nasdaq futures higher and Dow futures lower, Reuters reported, as memory chip stocks rose after SK hynix's results" (stocktitan.net, 2026-10-28). Note the divergence: the cash data shows the Dow outperforming on the day while QQQ's 20-day trend is negative — the futures read at 7 a.m. and the cash read at 9:30 a.m. do not fully agree, and I have no close to adjudicate.

Round 0 · Finding 4

US Equity Market — Session Recap for Wednesday, 2026-10-28

Executive Summary

Critical framing note first: at the time of data collection the 2026-10-28 US session was still in progress, not closed. The freshest in-window page I could retrieve was timestamped "Updated Oct 28, 10:17 AM ET" (stocksetups.com/today, dateModified: 2026-10-28T14:17:13Z), and my finance-tool pulls carry a last bar of 2026-10-28 13:30:00 UTC (= 09:30 ET, the opening bar). Therefore no closing levels exist yet and I cannot report them. Everything below is an intraday snapshot, explicitly labelled as such.

Second framing note: I could not retrieve the index point levels. All four index symbols (^GSPC, ^IXIC, ^DJI, ^RUT) returned "no data ... on any exchange" from finance_data. I substituted the four index ETFs (SPY/QQQ/DIA/IWM) as proxies and cross-checked against a same-day page. I am flagging this as a hard data gap rather than reconstructing index levels arithmetically.

Third: I could not verify a per-name catalyst for any individual mover. I ran out of tool budget before fetching the earnings/news pages for the individual names. I report the moves (which are cited and dated) and state plainly that the catalysts are UNVERIFIED. I have not invented a reason for any of them.

Key Findings

1. Indices — direction confirmed, point levels UNFETCHABLE

IndexSame-day % move (10:17 ET, 15-min delayed)Source
S&P 500+0.06%stocksetups.com/today
Nasdaq 100 (not Composite)−0.04%stocksetups.com/today
Dow 30+0.12%stocksetups.com/today
Russell 2000not published on any page I fetched — IWM proxy +0.04%stocksetups.com/today / finance tool

Note a real inconsistency worth flagging rather than smoothing over: the same page's <title> reads "S&P 500 +0.1%, Nasdaq 100 -0.0%, Dow 30 +0.1%" while its body JSON-LD reads "+0.06% / −0.04% / +0.12%". The page self-describes as "refreshed every 5 minutes" with "15-minute delayed data", so this is snapshot drift within a flat tape, not two different claims. Either way the conclusion is the same: a quiet, mixed, essentially unchanged open.

The finance tool's own ETF panel (last bar 2026-10-28 13:30 UTC, i.e. the opening print) corroborates: SPY +0.135%, QQQ +0.062%, DIA +0.161%, IWM +0.043%.

2. Breadth and sector context — this is 2026-10-27 data, BACKGROUND ONLY

…(truncated — the summary above captures the substance)

Round 0 · Finding 5

US Equity Market — Session of Wednesday, 28 October 2026

⚠️ Data-integrity preamble (read before the numbers)

Three limits on what follows, stated up front rather than buried:

  1. These are the latest ticks on the 2026‑10‑28 daily bar, not a verified 4:00 p.m. ET close. Every finance_data pull returned last_bar: 2026-10-28 13:30:00 (i.e. the current session's bar). Prices drifted between successive pulls (SPX 7732.62 → 7734.27 → 7731.70), which confirms a live feed. I could not obtain a same-day closing-bell article: the CNBC live-updates URL for this date returned HTTP 404 (https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/28/stock-market-today-live-updates.html — fetched, status 404). So treat all levels below as intraday/latest, not confirmed settlement prints.
  2. Breadth is NOT available for 28 October. The only breadth figures I found are explicitly labelled by their publisher as "at the Oct 27, 2026 close" — one session stale. I report them as such and do not present them as today's breadth.
  3. P/E is blank for every name because I never ran finance_data action=fundamentals. I have left the column empty and marked it, rather than filling it with an estimate.

*YTD is computed from the 2026‑01‑02 close carried in the same 209-bar series (SPX 6,858.47; IXIC 23,235.629; DJI 48,382.39; RUT 2,508.2233). It is my own division of two points from that series, not a vendor-reported YTD figure — no published YTD number was available to me.

What the shape of the tape says. The session was a narrow, low-conviction up-move concentrated in the old-economy indices: Dow +0.28% > Russell 2000 +0.20% > S&P 500 +0.13% > Nasdaq Composite +0.01%. The Nasdaq 100 confirms the tech softness — NDX 29,688.81, +0.13% on the day but −2.37% over 20 days, trading below its 20‑day (30,102.99) and 50‑day (29,810.86) averages with MACD at −189.2 versus a −96.5 signal line (finance_data analyze, NDX).

US Equity Session — Wednesday, 28 October 2026: Macro, Fed, Rates & the Stated Driver

Read-this-first caveat on provenance. I have three provenance tiers below and I label every number with one: [TOOL] = pulled live from finance_data; [FETCHED] = a page I retrieved myself with a visible in-window date; [SNIPPET] = a search-result excerpt whose underlying page I did not fetch — lower confidence, flagged as such. Where I could not verify something, I say so rather than fill it.

1. Executive Summary

The 28 October 2026 session was, on the evidence of the two same-day sources I was able to fetch, a low-conviction holding pattern into the 2:00 pm ET FOMC decision, not a session with a resolved macro catalyst. Both in-window sources describe equities "inching higher" at the open on Fed anticipation and a wait for mega-cap tech earnings. FETCHED — USA Today, 28 Oct 2026 08:05 ET

The single most important thing I must flag: every in-window source I reached was published before the 2:00 pm ET announcement. The USA Today live blog was timestamped 08:05 ET (last update I could read: 10:17 am ET) and the CNN live blog "Updated 10:24 AM EDT, Wed October 28, 2026." Neither reports the outcome of the decision. My attempt to reach the primary record — the FOMC statement at the canonical Federal Reserve URL — returned HTTP 404. So the actual 28 October decision is UNVERIFIED in my sourcing. What I can document is the consensus expectation (a hold) and the macro setup, not the result.

2. Key Findings

2.1 Federal Reserve communication — expectation verified, outcome NOT verified
